This page provide information about some Emailgency's features.

Password Policies

To avoid someone to easily guess your password, your password must meet the following requirements:

  • must be at least 8 characters long.
  • include characters from at least 2 classes amongst: lowercase, uppercase, digit and punctuation characters.

Mailbox expiration delay

Emailgency keep your emails in your mailbox for a limited period of time. This period can be changed by the user itself or reduced automatically by Emailgency to match the quota constraint.

VIP mailbox

VIP mailbox have more space and can send and receive email of the maximum size.

Maximum email size

Emailgency, like any mail server limit the size of any incoming or outgoing email. The current maximum limit is 20Mo. But the real limit depend of the service the user subscribed ! Read the specifications of the service you have or you expect to subscribe for more !

Anti-spam features

Emailgency allow you to enable or disable advanced anti-spam options. These options have minimum impact on legitimate mails and can be activated without fear.

Blacklisting

Blacklisting is based on a list of server known to send spam. This list is changing quickly, adding newly compromised computer and removing the cleaned one.

Whitelisting

Whitelisting will allow emails to skip the anti-spam features based on the sender address or the sender server. Emailgency allow the domain administrator to define some trusted email addresses or domains.

Greylisting

Greylisting will "temporarily reject" any email from a sender it does not recognize. If the mail is legitimate, the originating server will try again to send it later, at which time the destination will accept it and recognize further post of this sender as legitimate for a limited period! Greylisting is based on the premise that spammers and spambots will not re-try their messages or that the delay will give more time for the spam source to be listed in a DNS Blacklisting (see below). It is recommended to always activate this feature, and de-activate it only if you are suspecting problems.

Sender Policy Framework (SPF)

Most of the SMTP servers allow internal users to send e-mails claiming they are someone else. Thus, it is easy for spammers and virus to send e-mails from forged addresses.
SPF allows the owner of an Internet domain to publish inside the DNS the list of servers allowed to send emails on behalf of its domain. Any mail server can then reject emails sent by an unauthorized server.
The publication of the SPF pointers in the DNS will reduce the number of backscatter for the domain owner.
On the other side, the check of the SPF pointer on the mail server will reduce the number of SPAM and the generation of backscatters.
Both, the publication of the SPF pointer, and the checking on the mail server are distinct things you can choose to use or not.

Backscatter

Backscatter (also known as outscatter, misdirected bounces, blowback or collateral spam) is a side-effect of e-mail spam, viruses and worms, where email servers receiving spam and other mail send bounce messages to an innocent party. This occurs because the original message's envelope sender is forged to contain the e-mail address of the victim. A very large proportion of such e-mail is sent with a forged From: header, matching the envelope sender.

"Undelivered" folder

If recipients of an email cannot be identified or if the candidate quota is exhausted, this email will be moved into the Undelivered folder. This should never append but it is the last place where you can search for an email. This folder is only available through the IMAP protocol and require the user to subscribe to this folder. The webmail can be used to access this folder.

Flush Pending Emails

When your server is back on-line, you can press this button to speed up the delivery of all your pending emails to your server. This action is not required since the server retry to send these emails on a regular basis.
Use this button with care, its use is restricted because it will increase the load on the server. Use it only when you are sure your server is able to receive emails, or the normal delivery mechanism will be slowed down.

Tidy catchall

The system looks into new emails for yet unknown email addresses and create candidate addresses, that you will be able to promote into mailboxes in only one click. This process is done on a regular basis (2min), but if your are in a hurry to can activate the process yourself.

SMTP deny feature

All user of this server can suffer if it is used for the sending of unsolicited emails. If you know that some of your password where compromised, or are used for such kind of actions, you can disable these mailboxes individually or all in once to prevent the sending of unsolicited emails. This action don't prevent your user to read their emails, but only to send!

SMTP Transport

You can redirect your pending emails to the specified host. This option take priority over DNS MX preferences, but only for emails relayed by this server! The format is host[:port]. The port is optional and the host can be an IP address or a fully qualified hostname.
This can be useful when the IP address of your server has just changed and don't want to wait for the corresponding change in your DNS to spread around the world !

Domain alias

If your mail server host multiple domains, and if email addresses are the same for all these domains then this options let you mimic your server configuration.
For example, if you@example.com and you@example.net are two addresses of the same mailbox, and this is true for all addresses of both domains then you can make example.net an aliases of example.com

Your alternate customer's domain

This is a sub-domain of our domain that we have registered for you. You can use it for testing purpose, to force your emails to go trough our server and then test all the features even if your mail server is up and running. You can use this domain also if something is going wrong with your DNS setup. This domain is composed by the concatenation of your registered domain name without dote and emailgency.com. Forexample is your domain is example.com, your customer's domain is examplecom.emailgency.com.
Then sending an email to someone@examplecom.emailgency.com is similar to send to someone@example.com, except in the first case the mail will go through our server before to reach your.
Notice this domain is also the name you must use in your MX configuration and the address you must use when connection to our webmail or our webadmin interface but also in your mail reader application.

Notification

Customer can be notified of things happening on the server. This include a monthly report of the activity for the domain, a warning when a mailbox has reached its quota or when the system automatically reduced the expiration delay to avoid the overload, and finally an alert when your server is not responding anymore.
