Getting Started
Address Management (step by step)
For this sample we will imagine we have registered the imaginary domain mydomain.zz. But first you have to know about the 5 different kind of addresses you can create and how to use your alternate customer domain name. The 5 address types.
- Mailbox: A mailbox is an email address where a user receives his emails. A mailbox has a password, and can be configured to forward emails to another address.
- Alias: An alias is simply an alternate name for a mailbox. Messages sent to an alias arrive to the primary mailbox.
- Distribution list: Any email sent to a distribution list will be forwarded to all the members of the list. Members can only be internal mailbox addresses.
- Candidate: Emails for unknown addresses, will be stored in the catchall area and a candidate address will be created for each of them. You can promote a candidate into a mailbox or an alias at any time. The already received emails will be moved to the appropriate mailbox. This allow you to create users after emails were received for them. Candidates can be promoted into distribution list too, but already received emails will not be moved into member mailbox. To keep the list short, old candidates are removed on a regular basis. Candidate can also be converted into banished address to avoid the cycle of creation/destruction coming from the SPAM abuse.
- Banished: Email sent to a banished address will be lost forever without candidate creation ! These emails will not be forwarded, not even to the customer server and then nobody can read them. This allow you to stop some SPAM before they reach your server.
Your alternate customer domain name
Because the failure of your DNS can also have consequences on your mail traffic, Emailgency provides you an alternate domain name inside its own domain. For example, if your usual address is paul@mydomain.zz then emailgency will forward email sent to paul@mydomainzz.emailgency.com to you. When your problem is gone, these emails will continue to be forwarded to your own adress. You can then publish this address if necessary. The only difference between both is that emails for the alternate domain will always pass through our Emailgency server before to be forwarded to yours. This provide an easy way to test and evaluate the service !
Send some email to the new domain
To illustrate the concept of candidate, we will send an email to 4 addresses.

Select (1) these 2 addresses and (2) click the Mailbox button.

Before to switch to the "Mailbox" panel, we will create aliases for George and John that have unfortunately left the company. (1) Select George, (2) type the Paul address in the mailbox field and (3) click Alias of. Do the same for John and Ringo and (4) switch to the mailbox panel.

The 2 mailboxes exist and have each (1) one alias. The exclamation mark (2) in the Password column means these addresses don't still have any password ! (3) Select the Paul's address and select (4) Password in the More action... drop down menu.
Paul will receive an email on his usual mailbox that invite him to set/reset his password.

As expected George is in the list of alias.
